Insurance after a DWI

Agencies that write auto insurance for drivers with a DWI, or help with any proof of insurance NCDMV asks for.

A DWI conviction can affect your auto insurance, and getting a license restored or a limited driving privilege may require proof of insurance. NCDMV and the court will tell you exactly what proof is needed in your case. Ask an agent how a DWI will affect your premium and how long it stays on your record. Requirements can change; confirm with NCDMV or your insurer.

Ignition interlock

Installers of interlock devices approved by NCDMV, for drivers whose limited privilege or license restoration requires one.

North Carolina requires an ignition interlock on a limited driving privilege when the alcohol concentration was 0.15 or more, and on license restoration in some cases for one, three, or seven years (N.C. Gen. Stat. §§ 20-179.3(g5), 20-17.8). Use a vendor approved by NCDMV; ask NCDMV at (919) 715-7000 if you are unsure. Requirements can change.

Bail bonds

Bonding companies that post bonds at the Dare County Detention Center.

After a DWI arrest, a magistrate sets release conditions, which may include a secured bond. If you cannot pay a secured bond in full, a licensed bail bondsman can post it for a fee; North Carolina law caps that fee at 15 percent of the bond. Ask the fee, what collateral is needed, and what check-ins are required. Dare county detention center staff can tell you whether someone is in custody. Requirements can change.

DWI assessments and ADETS

Providers authorized by NCDHHS to do DWI substance use assessments, the Alcohol and Drug Education Traffic School (ADETS), and treatment.

North Carolina requires a DWI substance use assessment, and completion of the recommended education or treatment, before a license is restored after a DWI conviction, and an assessment is also needed for a limited driving privilege (N.C. Gen. Stat. §§ 20-17.6, 20-16.5(p), 20-179.3). Only providers authorized by NCDHHS count. Search the NCDHHS provider list at https://dmhdsohf.ncdhhs.gov/PROVIDERLIST/ to find one by county.

Towing and impound

Where your car went, and who can get it back.

After a DWI arrest, a car left at the scene is often towed to a private lot, and storage fees are usually charged for each day. Call the arresting agency first to find out which company has the car. Then ask the tow company for the total due, payment methods, lot hours, and what ID and proof of ownership to bring.

No towing listings yet. If police had your car towed, the arresting agency can tell you which company has it: Dare Central Communications at (252) 473-3444 (non-emergency) or the town police department that made the arrest. Towing companies can add a listing free.
